Praying 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

πŸ””

I join with all who are praying *
to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in us the fire of your divine love.
Send forth your Spirit, Lord, and our hearts will be regenerated.
And you will renew the face of the earth!*
God, by the light of the Holy Spirit, you instruct the hearts of your faithful; grant us by the Gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Family Spirit, Strength, and Awe of the Lord that we may not be conformed to the world but transformed by the renewal of our minds, so that we might discern and do what is good, acceptable, and pleasing to you, and perfect;

And so be the aroma of Christ in the world through Love, Joy, Peace, Patient Endurance, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and the Self-Control of total surrender to your Spirit.

Scriptural Theme

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Sing to the Lord a song of praise
(acapella, or accompanied by instruments / recorded music)

πŸ””

Praying 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (New International Version)

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. *
But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. *
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Response to the Scripture

Father, stir up your charisms in our midst; equip your church to advance your kingdom in the earth.

Draw near to God’s throne of grace
with the thanksgivings, prayers, & intercessions that are on your heart

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Ending Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise you and thank you for your great love and I lift up this day for your blessings. *
With your help I will live today as a responsible, generous, and honest human being. Like Jesus, I will try today to treat everyone I meet with dignity and respect. With Jesus’ spirit alive in me I will witness my love by thinking of others first and myself last.

Help me today, Father, to put into action what I have said in words. *
I ask this in your name. Amen.

Praying Ephesians 4:11-16

πŸ””

I join with all who are praying *
to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Let us bow down in humility at the power and grandeur of the Holy Spirit.  *
Let us worship the Holy Trinity and give glory today to the Paraclete, our Advocate.

Oh Holy Spirit, by Your power, Christ was raised from the dead to save us all. By Your grace, miracles are performed in Jesus’ name. By Your love, we are protected from evil. And so, we ask with humility and a beggar’s heart for Your gift of Peace within us. *
The Saints were tempted, attacked and accused by the devil who is the destroyer of peace. When we are accused by the devil, come to our aid as our Advocate and give us Peace that lasts through all trials!
Amen.

Praying Ephesians 4:11-16 (English Standard Version)

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. *
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Response to the Scripture

Father, stir up your charisms in our midst; equip your church to advance your kingdom in the earth.

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

Opening Prayer

Spirit of the living God, apart from You, we can do nothing.

Transform Your Church into the image of Jesus Christ.  Release Your power to bring healing to the sick, freedom to the oppressed and comfort to those who mourn.  Pour Your love into our hearts and fill us with compassion to answer the call of the homeless and the hungry and to enfold orphans, widows and the elderly in Your care.  Give us wisdom and insight for the complex problems we face today.  Help us to use the resources of the earth for the well-being of all. *

Praying Romans 12:3-8 (New International Version)

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. *
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

πŸ””

Praying 1 Corinthians 12:1-6 (New International Version)

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. *
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the LORD our God will call."

Praying Acts 2:1-10 (New International Version)

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: *
'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. the sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.'"

As we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

πŸ””

Praying the Scripture

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.

The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man. I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed -- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. *

For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."

Scriptural Theme

The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable.

Sing to the Lord a song of praise

(acapella, or accompanied by instruments / recorded music)

πŸ””

Praying the Scripture

But someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. Not all flesh is the same: Man has one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.

There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. *

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

Scriptural Theme

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Sing to the Lord a song of praise

(acapella, or accompanied by instruments / recorded music)

πŸ””

Praying the Scripture

But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.*

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. *
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the cobra's den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper's nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. *
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

Response to the Scripture

Who is like you, Oh God? Perfect in wisdom, unlimited in power - you will not relent until you fully accomplish the purposes of  your heart.

Ending Prayer

May we, like you, delight to give
extravagantly of ourselves
and of our goods
to the least and to the lostβ€”

lost to their own selves,
lost on the way to who knows what anymore,
but not lost to You*
may we give even to those
who may not fully appreciate what we have given,
but who nonetheless deserve the best and the finest,

so that we might acquire
a heart of generosity that knows no bounds,
that gives without expectation of return,
that offers the entire pantry of our lives in joy*
because we know to whom belong:
to a gracious Father in heaven
who owns the cattle on a thousand hills,
whose Son generates an excess of wine and a surfeit of bread,
exceeding all requirements of necessity,
and who gives us his Spirit without measure,
flooding our hearts with the love of the Eternal Godhead,
thereby enabling us to become emissaries of divine bounty
in a world that dares us to believe otherwise
and tempts us to live in any other way but generous-without-strings.

We pray this in the name of the One
who makes us rich by becoming poor for our sake.
Amen.

- W. David O. Taylor

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
