Chris Zimmerman - Who Are the Bruderhof?

During the final Wittenberg 2017 gathering, the theme for repentance was Catholics & Lutherans repenting to the Anabaptists, whom both of them had persecuted. We invited Chris Zimmerman of the Bruderhof to come and give us a hopeful picture of a modern-day Anabaptist community.

Talk given in Wittenberg on 3 November 2017.

There were many pictures that Chris showed to illustrate his talk, so you may prefer to watch the video:

Hanna Miley - Kristallnacht Book Reading

In 2011, Hanna Miley was invited to speak to the citizens of Gemünd, Germany on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. In 1938, the citizens of this same town had smashed in the windows of her father’s shop and burned down the synagogue. Now they were honoring a daughter of the town whom their forefathers had expelled, sending her parents to their death in Chelmo, Poland.

What would Hanna say to them? Would she express bitter anger and resentment at a lost childhood and altered life? Would she demand the return of her father’s properties, which rightly would still belong to her as her inheritance?

This recording is of what she said, translated into German for the packed gathering of 150+ who came to hear her. The next morning, she and her husband found that the town had “changed” irreversibly - lightened, become free, redeemed.

Here is a picture of the event, Hanna on the left (barely visible) with Claudia Wiedenmann translating into German on the right.

George Miley - Heart, Soul, Mind, & Strength ... and Your Neighbor

George Miley looks at Jesus’ summary of God’s Torah instructions - to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love our neighbor as ourself. What does this mean? How do we do it? This is the third teaching given in a series on Maturing toward Wholeness in the Inner Life at Christ Church Anglican in Phoenix, on 31 July 2011.

George has also made his notes available, if you are interested.

Advent Week 4 - Hope for the 2nd Coming by Dan Davis with Sandi Pedrotti

This was Dan Davis’ final sermon at Hope Chapel, on 8 September 2019. In all the years of pastoring, he had never preached a single sermon about the return of Jesus. He worked with Sandi Pedrotti to prepare a sermon that drew on Louis Dahlier’s four points of the Spirit preparing the earth for the return of the King. At the end of the sermon, he asks Sandi to close it out for him from his notes, and pray for the congregation.

Advent Week 2 - Psalm 24 by Mark Kinzer

Mark walks through Psalm 24 verse by verse, bringing his unique perspective to help us understand the different voices in the Psalm, and the way God shows his master plan in the Messiah. At the end, Mark links this psalm to Psalm 118 - Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord!!

Teaching given on 8 December 2020 in the 2020 Achana meeting, held via Zoom.

George Miley - The Reality Jesus Knew

George teaches the 2nd chapter of his new book, Leaders Following. Jesus knew the reality of the Kingdom of God, distinct from and interacting with the material reality that most of us are immersed in.

Teaching given for the Antioch Network gathering on 7 November 2020 (via Zoom).

Amy Cogdell - Treasures in Darkness

What is God doing in the midst of all this turmoil and crisis? And how do we respond? Amy reflects on these questions, drawing from Isaiah 26 and 45.

Teaching given on 24 October 2020 at the first mid-pandemic in-person CTR Retreat, at Camp Tejas. The setting was outside for safety, so sometimes the wind takes over the microphone. The teaching involved reading aloud from Isaiah 26:1-21, in three different segments, and concludes with a verse from Isaiah 45.

It is good to have a Bible open to Isaiah 26 while listening, to be able to follow along. For your convenience, the four passages are also shown below.

Isaiah 26

In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a strong city;
God will appoint salvation for walls and bulwarks.
Open the gates,
That the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in.
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever,
For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.

For He brings down those who dwell on high,
The lofty city;
He lays it low,
He lays it low to the ground,
He brings it down to the dust.
The foot shall tread it down—
The feet of the poor
And the steps of the needy.”

The way of the just is uprightness;
O Most Upright,
You weigh the path of the just.

Yes, in the way of Your judgments,
O Lord, we have waited for You;
The desire of our soul is for Your name
And for the remembrance of You.
With my soul I have desired You in the night,
Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early;
For when Your judgments are in the earth,
The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

10 Let grace be shown to the wicked,
Yet he will not learn righteousness;
In the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly,
And will not behold the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, when Your hand is lifted up, they will not see.
But they will see and be ashamed
For their envy of people;
Yes, the fire of Your enemies shall devour them.

12 Lord, You will establish peace for us,
For You have also done all our works [g]in us.
13 O Lord our God, masters besides You
Have had dominion over us;
But by You only we make mention of Your name.
14 They are dead, they will not live;
They are deceased, they will not rise.
Therefore You have punished and destroyed them,
And made all their memory to perish.
15 You have increased the nation, O Lord,
You have increased the nation;
You are glorified;
You have expanded all the borders of the land.

16 Lord, in trouble they have visited You,
They poured out a prayer when Your chastening was upon them.
17 As a woman with child
Is in pain and cries out in her [i]pangs,
When she draws near the time of her delivery,
So have we been in Your sight, O Lord.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain;
We have, as it were, brought forth wind;
We have not accomplished any deliverance in the earth,
Nor have the inhabitants of the world fallen.

19 Your dead shall live;
Together with my dead body they shall arise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust;
For your dew is like the dew of herbs,
And the earth shall cast out the dead.

20 Come, my people, enter your chambers,
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past.
21 For behold, the Lord comes out of His place
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
The earth will also disclose her [l]blood,
And will no more cover her slain.

Isaiah 45

I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who call you by your name,
Am the God of Israel.

Thomas Cogdell - David Dances Before the Ark

A lengthy (1-hour!) teaching that flows between the history of 1 Chronicles and the poetry of Psalm 132. The theme is to not give up in your call to establish a place of prayer and worship in your life, and in the church.

Includes the story of Felipe Adams saving Cielo, and also Michael Michel worshipping during the ministry time at the end.

Teaching given at Hope Chapel on June 10, 2007.
